Saint-Nazaire (France - EU) - 25/01/2011 - The President of the Republic French had to go to Saint Nazaire, with Igor Sechin, Vice Prime Minister of Russia, for a signing ceremony of an agreement between France and the Russian Federation to achieve two buildings Projection and Command (BPC) Mistral class, combining several functions including that of helicopter carriers. The visit marks the actual signing of the contract Mistral between France and Russia, announced in July 2010 for construction workers STX: "Together with our Russian friends, you make the two PCBs. The contract, one is in the process of negotiate, but the decision to do so, it is certain! " According to John Guisnel Point on 24 December, Moscow had announced in a statement "at the end of the international tender launched on October 5 for the supply to the Russian navy of two buildings projection and command, the Russian authorities had accepted the offer by the consortium formed by French manufacturers DCNS and STX and Russian shipyards OSK. The Russian company Unified Shipbuilding (OSK) and the French group DCNS signed on 1 November, an agreement to create a joint consortium. This agreement should allow two other buildings in Russia after a transfer of technology. For the record, the Russian Vice Premier Igor Sechin, who kept the upper hand in the shipyards OSK, did not seem thrilled at the time by the acquisition of PCBs by Russia then there was talk of an alliance with the South Korean company Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), who developed the helicopter carrier Dokdo. The case, originally promised to Sergei Pugachev and his group OPK finally ousted, had also been the subject of lengthy discussions in Moscow and industrial policies. Meanwhile, the President of the Republic should also announce the launch of wind energy at sea with a bid of up to 3 giga-watts. This is the second time in six months that the President of the Republic is hosted by Jacques Hardeley, Director STX general who said he wanted to diversify into naval vessels and offshore. Los Alamos (U.S.) - 21/01/2011 - 3B Tips - Scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory in cooperation with the Bureau of Research of the U.S. Navy have achieved a breakthrough in the program of "free electron laser (FEL)" for a laser defense system, featuring an injector capable of producing enough electrons to generate a megawatt-class laser beam intended to play a role weapons systems in next generation.
The program manager is Dr. Dinh C. Nguyen, who joined the laboratory since 1984, member of the American Physical Society, the International Program Committee FEL, FEL & the Technology Area Working Group, says that the injector has operated as expected .... "But until now we did not evidence supporting our model. He is currently working to measure the electron beam continuously, and hopes to establish a world record. "" It is a great step forward for the program and FEL technology in the U.S. Navy, "said Quentin Saulnier Program Director Free Electron Laser (FEL) for the Office of Naval Research (ONR). "The fact that the team has nine months in advance gives us enough time to achieve our objectives by the end of 2011. "
" Research is a necessary step to deploy a day, a weapon system laser (FEL) megawatt-class, and revolutionize the defense of ships " you it has added. "The FEL must provide naval forces of the United States a laser defense system almost instantly usable in any marine environment worldwide."
ONR expects to be able to begin testing at sea from 2018. For the record, and in the case of another type of laser use protection in Israel has been abandoned in favor of the system "Iron Dome" rocket base.
